Classical Dance classes

Jeeyar Asramam is pleased to offer classes for two of the popular Indian classical dance types:

Kuchipudi

GURU Smt. Indira Sreeram Dixith

Kuchipudi is one of the foremost classical dance styles of India, from the South-East Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It derives its name from the village of Kuchelapuram, a place about 40 miles from Vijayawada in the South-East Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Kuchipudi is not merely a dance form but is a combination of dance, gestures, speech and song. It is known for its graceful movements and its strong narrative / dramatic character. The abinaya aspect of Kuchipudi is unique for it combines both the stylistic (natya) and the (loka) realistic ways of expression. The ease with which the movements are executed brings a natural grace to the nritta aspect of Kuchipudi. In Kuchipudi, the movements are graceful and vigorous.

Smt. Indira Sreeram Dixith took up Bharata Natyam at a young age and had her arangetram at the age of 9 under the tutelage of Guru Mythili Kumar. She then continued to learn and specialize in KUCHIPUDI dance style under the Kuchipudi maestro kalaprapoorna Padma Bhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. She had more dedicated and professional training under the tutelage of her Guru. She has toured and given performances in almost all the major cities in India, former Soviet Union, Europe, Canada and US. As a member of the elite dance team she has taken part in major festivals of India.

As a performer, teacher, and choreographer, Indira Sreeram Dixith wishes to share her extraordinary joy in dance, striving for new and effective ways to communicate the beauty of Kuchipudi to diverse audiences through new, vibrant, and creative choreography.

Kuchipudi classes are offered on Sundays at 11:20am.

Bharata Natyam

GURU Smt. Bindu Madiraju

Bharata Natyam comes from the words Bhava (Expression), Raga (Music), Tala (Rhythm) and Natya (Classic Indian Musical Theater). Today, it is one of the most popular and widely performed dance styles and is practiced by many dancers all over the world. Bharata Natyam is the oldest and the most popular of the classical dance forms in India. Its origin dates back to the 4th century B.C. What distinguishes Bharata Natyam from all the other Indian Classical dance forms is it’s clear lines, almost geometric; its agility and lightness together with forceful footsteps, its strength, crispness and most importantly its majesty.

Bindu Madiraju is an accomplished Bharatanatyam performer, choreographer and teacher. She started learning Bharatanatyam at the age of five from her Guru Smt. Suneela at Andhra Balananda Sangham and gave her maiden performance – Arangetram – at the age of 11. Her zeal and enthusiasm to learn more details and techniques of dancing made her go for advanced training under the guidance of renowned Gurus like Smt. Padma Subramanyam and Sri Badrinath (Disciple of Smt. K.Uma Rama Rao).

She was also trained in Kuchipudi style of dance at Thyagaraja Music & Dance College, Hyderabad and completed a Certification course. She was trained in folk dances of India at Jawahar Bal Bhavan, Hyderabad. During the last 25 years, Bindu gave many Bharatanatyam solos and group dance performances. She also performed in numerous Mythological, Historical, and Social theme based ballets, and Semi-Classical dances in various prestigious art events at several major cities in India and abroad. She gave over 150 performances

Bharata Natyam classes are offered on Saturdays at 11:20am and on Sundays at 11.30am.
